Bicycle Journey
Pradyumna Kumar Mahandia was born in 1949 into a lower caste of weavers in the Kandhapada village of the Athmallik Sub-division in the district of Angul, Odisha, India. At the time, they were regarded as “untouchables.”
He studied art at Visva-Bharati after graduating from Mahendra High School in Athmallik. Even though he was accepted to the art school, he was forced to return home since he was unable to pay the tuition. Later, he enrolled in the art program at the Government College of Art and Crafts in Khallikote, Odisha. In order to fulfill his artistic desires, he enrolled in the Fine Arts program at the College of Art, Delhi, in 1971.
His drawing of Mrs. Indira Gandhi, the Indian prime minister at the time, catapulted him to stardom in the portraiture world.
In 1975, a 19-year-old Swedish royal family student named Charlotte Von Sledvin went to India to have a talented artist create a painting of her. The artist Pradyuman Kumar Mahanandia has established an exceptional reputation as a talented painter despite the extremely challenging circumstances. Charlotte Von Sledvin traveled to India to have her photograph done because of his fame.
The two fell in love by the time the portrait was completed. Charlotte’s attractiveness captivated Pradyumna. He had never before seen a more attractive Western woman. Despite his greatest efforts, he was never able to adequately capture her beauty in the image. Charlotte, however, was enchanted by his simplicity and lovely demeanor, and the image was stunning. She made the impulsive decision to extend her stay in India because of him. After a few days, these turned into weeks and eventually months. After falling so passionately in love, the couple decided to tie the knot. Charlotte adopted the Indian name Charulata, and the two were married by customary ceremonies.
Sadly, Charlotte eventually had to depart once more to finish her education in London. She invited her husband to accompany her, but PK wanted to complete his education because he was still a student. Despite being separated by thousands of miles, the two’s feelings for one another remained constant. They kept in touch with one another by exchanging letters nearly every week. The newlyweds, of course, suffered greatly from their great separation. When Charlotte offered to buy her husband airline tickets, he declined. In addition to deciding to finish his education first, he was also determined to get back together with the love of his life at his own pace. He even promised her that he would stop at nothing to see her again.
To see his beloved again, he embarked on a journey to the Far West. That was in 1978.
Before traveling to Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Germany, Austria, and Denmark, he traveled from New Delhi to Amritsar.
During the journey, his cycle frequently broke down, and he even had to go days without eating. Nothing, however, could weaken his resolve.
He finally arrived in Gothenburg, Sweden, after a backbreaking trek of four months and three weeks.
Back then, not many nations required a visa to travel.
When he arrived, Swedish immigration officials questioned him, astonished to discover a man from India riding a bicycle.
PK explained why he was there and showed them pictures of his nuptials to Charlotte.
The idea that a European with royal blood would wed a destitute Indian shocked and disbelieved the authorities.
Even PK was unsure if his lady love would accept him after the unexpected news.
Charlotte drove to Gothenburg and welcomed her husband with unrestrained joy after learning about the Indian man who had cycled for roughly five months.
In defiance of a royal custom that forbade non-white people from living with the nobility, her parents welcomed Pradyumna into their family.
Dr. PK Mahanandia, who has been married for 40 years, resides in Sweden with his wife Charlotte and their two daughters while serving as India’s Odiya Cultural Ambassador.
Once shunned as an untouchable, his village now greets him with thunderous applause whenever he visits.
Pradyumna is a well-known artist in Sweden and currently works for the Swedish government as an adviser for art and culture. In remembrance of their love, the Swedish government has produced videos that chronicle this timeless love of the century.
His drawings have been featured in the esteemed UNICEF greeting cards and shown in major locations across the globe.
Utkal University of Culture (UUC) in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha state, India, granted him an honorary doctorate (Degree of Honoris Causa) on January 4, 2012. Additionally, the Odisha government appointed him as the Oriya Cultural Ambassador to Sweden.
