An old widow discovers her 5-pound note is missing, leading to an unexpected lesson in kindness and honesty. This heartwarming tale reveals how small acts can have a big impact.
Chippenham Processing all of the mail with unreadable addresses was George’s responsibility as a Post Office employee. He received a letter on his desk one day shortly before Christmas, written in wobbly handwriting and simply addressed, ‘To God’. George opened the letter, finding no additional clue on the envelope, and read:

An old widow
To God,
I am a widow who is ninety-three years old and receives a state pension. My purse was stolen yesterday. It had £100, my whole fortune, and my pension was not due until after Christmas. I had invited two of my friends around for Christmas lunch, which is next week. I have nothing left over to buy food with without that money. You are my only hope because I have no family to turn to. Could you kindly help me, God?
Chippenham In a show of generosity, George, who was deeply moved, posted a copy of the letter on the staff notice board at the main sorting office in Fareham, where he worked. When the other postmen saw the letter, they all reached into their pockets and whipped around. They together raised £95. All of the employees felt good about themselves for the remainder of the day after sending the money to the elderly woman in an officially franked Post Office envelope.

Christmas came and went. A few days later, another letter addressed to ‘God’ was delivered to the Sorting Office. Many of the postmen gathered around George as he opened the mail. It stated,
To God,
I will always be grateful for what you’ve done for me. Thanks to your generosity, I was able to provide my guests with a lovely luncheon. We had a wonderful day, and I told my friends about your wonderful gift. Even Father John, our parish priest, is thrilled, yet we still can not go on. Furthermore, £5 was missing. The culprits must have been those Post Office fraudsters.

George could not help musing on Oscar Wilde‘s quote: ‘A good deed never goes unpunished’
